EM, which stands for effective microorganisms, is a unique technology that combines naturally occurring beneficial microorganisms, principally lactic acid bacteria and yeast, which are used for fermented foods. EM creates antioxidant-substances and purifies the environment.
Effect Of EM
In 1992, there was a layer of over 30cm of solidified fat and oil mixed with animal grease and waste motor oil in the drainage pond of the stockbreeding-processing factory in Brazil. Pouring EM there, all fat and oil disappeared. People from all over the world who knew that EM could degrade petroleum-derived oil asked the EM professionals the possibility of breaking down chemical substances by EM. As a result, it is found that EM can break down toxic substances, which have cancer risks, such as trichloroethylene, pesticide residue and chemical substances contained in soil or water.
EM was used for taking care of the nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl'. According to the research of the Institute of Radiobiology National Academy of Science of Belarus, safe agricultural crops started to be grown in the radioactively-contaminated areas by the effect of EM. In addition, antioxidant-EM-X produced by EM has the ability to remove the radioactive matter and heavy metals contained in the bodies of people who suffer from nuclear radiation. According to the result, the Belorussian government recognized EM-X as a soft drink for health.
Seto Inland Sea is surrounded by islands. It is a famous place for the production of Nori (seaweed), as a lot of rivers containing minerals from mountains flown into the sea. Once it was known as a good fishing place. However, it was filled with river pollution, had a high frequency red tide outbreak, and an epidemic of diatom associated with industrial high-speed growth. A fishery operator, who used EM for handling diatom attached to seaweed nets in Uchiumi-cho in Hiroshima informed that diatom was reduced surprisingly.
Moreover, there is an extraordinary effect. After 3 months had passed since the fishery operator started to use EM, sludge gathered in the drainage, height 0.7cm, width 1m, and breadth 500m, was cleared. This is the effect that the water treated by EM had as it flowed into the drainage. If we estimate the cost of disposing sludge, it costs about 10 million JPY. The effect of EM is overwhelming; though the amount of EM poured into the drainage was certainly massive, as 1600t of seawater treated by EM was poured in a day, and 40t of fresh water containing EM was poured in a day.
This success accelerated the activity to popularize EM, and egg cockles (shellfish), which had never been found offshore of Uchiumi town in Hiroshima, came up in large quantities. In addition, the quantity of fish increased, and anchovies were harvested twice as much as the previous year in the sea around Uchiumi town. The good reputation of EM spread, and EM has been used for cleaning up rivers and oceans in Japan ever since.
